I am fairly good at finding information on the web and sorting thru what is accurate but have run into a problem.

    I asked the following question.

We are great-grandparents of a great-grandson so are we maternal or paternal great-grandparents?

He is our sons’ daughters child.

Your website is the only one I could find that even came close to the information I was looking for but I am not sure about how to read it.

Using your great grandson as the reference point, you are related through his mother (your granddaughter) and therefore you are one of his two sets of maternal great grandparents. Your great grandson also has two sets of great grandparents through his paternal lineage.

Interesting to read your article about my great-grandfather, William Allan. Have only heard positive things up until this point-where I basically stumbled upon you comparing these geneticists’ actions to the desires of Nazi Germany. Maybe there is some truth to it, but maybe the whole story hasn’t been shared. Wondering where you got your information and if you realize these are people who also helped many with their research?

We are all complicated, a combination of good and bad. Your great grandfather was definitely not a Nazi. He made some important contributions to genetics. And he thought he was doing good by encouraging sterilization. In retrospect, maybe when he thought he was doing good perhaps he was misguided. Who isn’t?

From the point of view of the great grandson you are on

his maternal side. You are on his mother’s side of the family.
